Veloteca BIROTCH, mobile art library for the CAP, Saint-Fons, 2026
In 2026 the CAP, the contemporary art centre of Saint-Fons in the Lyon metropolis, turns forty. Its art library lends more than 900 works to the public. To take them out of its rooms and into public space, the art centre launched a call for a mobile art library on a bicycle, won by GRRIZ.
The Veloteca is a pedal-assist electric bicycle that pulls a two-wheeled trailer, BIROTCH. The name comes from the biroccino, the small cart of the Italian countryside, spelled the way it is pronounced on the other side of the Alps.
Seen from the front, BIROTCH looks like an origami crane. Closed, it is a compact volume clad in mirror that reflects the streets it passes through. When parked it opens its two wings and shows the public the works it was carrying. At the back, the tail lifts and gives access to the hold, where the works and the mediation material travel.
The Veloteca is a commission of the Ville de Saint-Fons for the CAP, with the support of the Cnap under the Artothèques en ruralité programme. It was presented to the public on 16 October 2026 at the CAP, during Résonance, the Lyon Biennale.
